Ng Chong Lim, pianist and composer from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, spent his early years in Seremban before pursuing his musical studies at the Royal College of Music (RCM) in London under the tutelage of Prof Frank Wibaut. He further refined his craft at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz in Austria, studying piano with Prof Elza Kolodin and composition with Prof Beat Furrer.
As both a soloist and chamber musician, Chong Lim has graced the stages of prestigious international festivals, including the Evmelia International Music Festival in Greece, the 21st New Music Festival in Almaty, Kazakhstan, the International Taipei Piano Maestro Festival, the Perugia Music Festival in Italy and International BachFest Malaysia; he has also appeared as a concerto soloist with the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra. He has served on the jury of numerous international competitions, such as the ASEAN International Chopin Piano Competition (Malaysia), the Jakarta International Piano Competition, the Ohrid Pearls International Competition for Young Musicians (North Macedonia) and the Singapore International Piano Competition.
An active and passionate composer, Chong Lim’s works have been premiered in various countries around the world. Notable compositions include Three Sketches for Two Pianos (premiered in Taiwan, 2004), Rimba, Window and Xiang (premiered by the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra in 2006–2007), Amorphous for string orchestra (premiered at the Streams New Music Festival in Brauweiler, Germany, 2010), Footprints for solo piano (premiered at the John Donald Robb Composers’ Symposium, New Mexico, USA, 2011), Shadows for piano and Malay traditional instruments (premiered at the International Festival of Classical Music, Kuala Lumpur, 2011) and Fireflies for orchestra, specially commissioned by the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra in 2019.
Chong Lim has held teaching appointments as an adjunct lecturer at the University of Malaya and the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in Singapore. Beyond his musical career, he devotes his time to charitable work, supporting the homeless and underprivileged children both in Malaysia and in Nepal. In recognition of his significant contributions to Malaysia’s music scene, he was awarded the Pingat Setiawan Tuanku Muhriz (STM) — Associate Order of Loyalty to Tuanku Muhriz — by the Yamtuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan in 2011.
