A Piano Recital Presented by Julie Bees

The magnificent "3 Bs"—German composers Bach, Beethoven and Brahms! Bach and Beethoven set the bar very high and were tough acts for Brahms to follow. By studying their works, he becomes a composer of consummate skill. In Opus 118, one of his very last works, he speaks directly to the heart in short compositions that also demonstrate his mastery of form and counterpoint. His best friends were dying, and the loneliness and grief he felt surely inspired these tender and poetic works.

这场演奏会将聚焦三大德国作曲家—巴赫，贝多芬，布拉姆斯。巴赫与贝多芬的音乐创作水平之常高，一度让布拉姆斯望而却步。在布拉姆斯苦心专研两位前辈的作品之下，也成为了一名优秀的作曲家。布拉姆斯的晚期作品-- 作品118号，表露了其内心最真实的情感，同时亦展现了他对曲式与对位法的精通。友人的故去令布拉姆斯感到悲伤及孤独，无疑激发了他创作如此曲细腻与富有诗意的作品

The programme that I chose to play today sums up into two ideas – "Homage" and "Grow". Busoni paid his homage to Bach by growing his chaconne theme to a huge showpiece; Berg paid his homage to Schoenberg, at the same time reminding us that 12-tone grew from the traditional form; and you can say that Beethoven pay his homage to the very first f-minor theme by developing a 2nd subject so close to the character of the 1st subject and growing them across movements until the concluding note of the whole work. Please enjoy the emotional roller coaster that grows out of these masters’ superb creativity!

Human seeks in Nature the reflection of their innermost soul. Liszt wrote to his pèlerinage: "having felt that the phenomena of nature […] did not pass before my eyes as pointless images but stirred deep emotions in my soul, and that between us a vague but immediate relationship had established itself, an undefined but real rapport, an inexplicable but undeniable communication, I have tried to portray in music a few of my strongest sensations and most lively impressions."

The confluence between human and nature explores the water world through Chopin’s Barcarolle & Ravel’s Jeux d’eau. The Ondine, the water spirit from Ravel exhibits the eerie tragedy of the unattainable attempt from the Ondine to pursuit love between human and herself that she may empathize the human soul as a natural spirit.

Chopin’s Polonaise Fantaisie illustrate the composer’s monologue with nostalgia and longing to his glorified homeland while Schumann depicts various figures among friends and commedia dell'arte to celebrate the carnival in memoriam of his first love using her home town’s spelling in a musical cryptogram.

人们从大自然中寻找灵魂深处的反映。李斯特曾经在他的《巡礼之年》中写道：身临大自然的现象[……] 至美的画面不是毫无意义的图像，而是波动我内心深处的情感。在我和自然之间，已经建立了某种模糊的关系。那是一种不明确但又是无比真实的默契，一种莫名但又不可否认的交流。 于是，我试图用音乐来描绘出我最强烈的感知和最深刻的印象。

「大自然与人的交融」透过肖邦的《船歌》和拉威尔的《水之嬉戏》来探索水的世界。在《水妖》一曲中, 水精灵追求她与人类的爱，希望透过爱情体悟灵魂的真貌。拉威尔在作品中如诗般地描绘了水精灵不可能的尝试、铺天盖地的魔法与最后被拒成魔的洒著雨泪与笑声而回归虚无。

肖邦的幻想波兰舞曲展示了肖邦对乡愁和家国荣耀的渴望的独白。舒曼利用朋友间的人物和意大利即兴喜剧的描绘来庆祝纪念初恋的狂欢。曲子中舒曼应用音乐密码来拼写她家乡名字。
